Parent Child Interactionals (KIPS)

KIPS (Key to Interactive Parenting Scale)
A Parent child interactional for children 2-71 months of age

In efforts to improve parenting behaviors and address how they impact a child’s healthy development we must first be able to recognize what those behaviors are. The KIPS tool assesses parent child relationships through a brief observation. It is strength based and provides feedback to the professionals and families of areas that can be addressed to improve current parent child relationships.

The assessment takes 20 minutes to administer, and 10 minutes to score. It was developed through literature reviews, focus groups and factor analysis. It was tested for reliability and validity and included diverse populations throughout its development.

KIPS measures 12 key behaviors to include: sensitivity, response to emotion, encouragement, exploration and curiosity, involvement, interactions, limits and consequences, openness to child’s agenda, expectations, adaptation, and support. The skills are rated on a 1-5 scale and allows for specific instances to be referenced in a narrative format for each category being measured.
